En startmotor (også kendt som selvstarter) er en enhed, der bruges til at rotere en forbrændingsmotor for at starte motorens drift ved egen kraft. En startmotor kan være elektrisk, pneumatisk eller hydraulisk. Bilstartere er kraftige elektriske motorer, der starter din motor, når du drejer nøglen til tændt position for at starte din bil. Dette system har en motor med en tilsluttet solenoide. Solenoidens opgave er at "tage" batteristrømmen og sørge for, at den kommer til startmotoren.
